Rhetorical Analysis

In this part of the course, students are to read a chosen Engineering proposal and do deep analysis through strategies of rhetoric produced in the paper. Students are to also identify how the tone and diction of language may have an affect on the audiences’ judgement of the paper.

This paper aims to find rhetoric of research done that is within the Writing for Engineers field. The research paper being examined is named “Fake news detection within online social media using supervised artificial intelligence algorithms” written by research based in Firat University, Elazig, Turkey; Feyza Atunbey Ozbey, Bilal Alatas. The reports’ purpose to is to test artificial intelligence system and gather information on if the tools can detect the authenticity of news spread online. The researchers completed this research and present the development of artificial intelligence to the audience who’re interested in innovation of technology. The more niche audience would be individuals or groups that are combatting fake news and researching ways to counter it. The authors explain the surge of social media being the major outlet for news intake.

The researchers provide a dialogue with the audience as to why this research is purposeful, as they persuade that “Reviews, opinions, and news on social media have been playing an important role in decisions of users. The spread of low-quality news, namely fake news, have a negative effect on opinions of society and individual.” (pg. 2). The tone of the writing is didactic, in the sense of informing the issue at hand, as well as providing evidence of it as well.

An early imagery that is shown in the text and is the opening of the Introduction where the researchers state “Social media has become an increasing popular way obtaining information for people. Additionally, people share their personal activities, interest, and opinions on different social media platforms.” (pg. 1). Tone in this specific opening portrayed the researcher trying to connect the audience with the common use of social media in daily life, and how it affects the way people may view certain stuff. This ultimately is the reason why the researchers are to conduct the experiment.

The researchers use the rhetoric appeal of ethos by mentioning other works on the subject in order to show transparency about the subject to the audience; as they state, “Various approaches have proposed to detect fake news in various type of data.” (Relate Works, pg. 2). This provide the audience to be intrigued with the informative background of the issue outside of the text. This ultimately brings upon the next rhetoric appeals of logos, with the researcher providing the not only sources of previous reports that led to this research, but as well as the research itself. The subleaders of each section give the audience the ability to easily recognize how the research is broken down.

The evidence on the model given is shown to give numerical figures, as well as the numerical algorithms for the, which shows the rhetorical appeal of logos. This is one of the stronger sections of the whole paper as the many tables which portray articles with a section mentioning its authenticity. This gives the audiences the ability to see the evidence in at hand with concise lettering and labeling and not limited to just labeling data to each artificial intelligence algorithm used.

Another one of the researchers’ goals are to keep the discussion of the evidence pure to the reader as it states very clearly when speaking about Figure 3. On page 8, “The first column represents the number of news, the second column is the news in text, and the third column represents the label of the news as “Fake” or “Real” (Experimental Evaluation, pg. 8). Such length of explanations shows that the evidence may not be easy to interpret at instant glance, so instructions are given. The aspect technical writing is shown here, with complete expository and background information regarding the experiment being given to the audience.

Overall, the researchers chose their specific wording and tone for the audience to be engaged in the study, as well as give insight into the matter at hand prior to the research that was being conducted; mentioning why fake news has potential to spread rapidly, and their solution can be using artificial intelligence systems to counter it. The journal works well with engaging the audience through its rhetoric. It’s presented through clear sections, proper foundation of technical writing through the sections where evidence is presented, and a supportive reference style of footnoting; though the sources at located at the end of the paper rather than the page in which the footnote is on.
